It will come as something of a surprise to some that there were so many British generals in service during WWII; in fact there were more than 750, but some can be - or rather, have to be - excluded from such a reference work for pragmatic reasons. There is so much information to be included that their involvement, in comparison, is negligible. The major figures, such as William Slim, Bernard Montgomery, Archibald Wavell, Claude Auchinlek, Alan Brook and Percy Hobart naturally are given more prominence than others. But for all those included, the basic information is perfectly accessible. For the lesser-known figures the information is given in tabular form for ease of reference. "The Directory of British Generals" runs to some 300,000 words and is set to become the definitive reference work on the subject. Fifteen years of research in government documents, regimental histories and secondary sources ensures it.
