Science in Western and Eastern civilization in Carolingian times
edited by Paul Leo Butzer, Dietrich Lohrmann
The intellectual crisis of the fifth to seventh centuries was followed by "new beginnings" in both West and East, that become tangible by AD 800. Latin and Greek works were transcribed or translated, then circulated and commented upon, in a context of new practical needs and scholarly interests. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by 25 international specialists, focusing on the renewal of scientific efforts in the Latin West, Byzantium and the Islamic East. It presents unpublished, original texts and modern translations, analytical papers on calendric computation, as well as review articles examining mathematics, astronomy, and the applied sciences. A comprehensive study of illuminated Carolingian and Byzantine manuscripts serves to illustrate the subject matter, while a tabular overview of scientific achievements c AD 400-950 concludes the work.
